The Met Gala 2023 saw some of the world’s most famous celebrities and fashion aficionados gather to celebrate Karl Lagerfeld’s remarkable artistry and legacy. Guests were inspired to pay tribute to the designer by donning some of his most iconic archival creations and outfits, all channeling his unique aesthetic. With those from Chanel and Fendi, creative designs by Gucci, Versace, and Michael Kors were ever present on the red carpet, all reminiscent of Lagerfeld’s influence in fashion.
Lagerfeld’s trademark black-and-white color palette, high collars, fingerless gloves, and bold accessories and pearls were go-to choices by guests. References to Karl Lagerfeld’s quintessential black dress, jackets, and suit designs were also prominent, showcasing intricate lace detailing, daring cutouts, voluminous shapes, and sensual but sophisticated silhouettes. Lagerfeld’s ability to reinvent the classic black dress and suits while infusing them with modern elegance and sophistication made him a master of the genre.
Memorable highlights of the night included Ben Platt in a sequined Wiederhoeft tux, Jenna Ortega in a deconstructed high-low Thom Browne look, Gisele Bündchen in a white dress and feathered cape from Chanel Haute Couture Spring-Summer 2007, Doja Cat paying tribute to Lagerfeld’s cat, Choupette, with one of the most talked-about make-up works of the night (closely followed by Lil Nas X), Cardi B and Kendall Jennell who paid tribute to Lagerfeld’s preference for starchy collars, and Janelle Monáe, who stole the night in a Thom Browne ensemble composed of various outfits at once. Bad Bunny paired his backless white suit with a garland train showcasing dozens of soft rosettes.
