For the Dior Spring-Summer 2019 haute couture collection, Maria Grazia Chiuri drew inspiration from the wondrous world of the circus. The circus with its poetry and magic have captured the mind of artists since its beginnings, and Dior first featured the circus theme in 1950, when a TV report on the Maison’s show at The Savoy in London was titled “Dior ‘Circus’ Comes to Town.” This theme later came back to life under John Galliano’s creative direction. For the Spring-Summer 2019 collection, the fashion house has captured the magic and artistry associated with the circus.

In this collection, we can find a parade of very light pants narrowed at the ankle, and shorts paired with sheer shirts, ruffs, and ribbons. Leather corsets can also be found, and the geometric clown outfit has been reimagined through materials and embroidery.

Bestiary motifs are also key details in this haute couture collection. An assortment of animals such as horses and elephants were embroidered on some of the outfits together with the message “Dior Dream Parade.” The white clown character of the circus inspired the makeup for the show. – GM
