During New York Fashion Week Fall/Winter 2019, Claudia Li showcased a collection which follows upon her “breakthrough” last season where she featured a cast of all Asian women. Capturing global attention, Claudia heard from women from all across the world. Women who for the first time felt recognized in the industry of fashion. The impact of their stories influenced Claudia’s creative process, inspiring the theme behind the new collection: “unapologetic celebration.”
Leaving fear and hesitation at the door, Claudia looked back at some of her first sketches and created this passionate collection. Weaving, knitting and braiding handiwork come back in full force, some of Claudia’s most recognized strengths. The designs are representative of the Claudia Li woman: fun and playful while being smart and ready for the cold weather of winter. Contrast is introduced in the collection through the use of metallics and glitter, and sequined evening wear paired with denim. Abstract graphic patterns are representative of Claudia’s love for art.
“It’s like the anxiety you have when you’re the first person on the dance-floor,” the designer tells us. “The uncertainty of whether you look good, or whether you look awkward and foolish. After four years in this business, I can finally say: this is who I am, this is what I love, and I am unafraid to dance.” – GM
