Initially launching as a national award for local talent, the Taiwan Fashion Design Award is now one of the major fashion events in Asia, and a worldwide affair, with participation open to designers from all over the globe. The first-place prize award went to Gajadeera and Ruwanthi Pavithra, from Sri Lanka, for their work “Sustainable Fashion/Textile and Traditional Crafts.” Second-place awards were presented to Yeh Yu-Hsien for “Mirage,” and Chen Ching-Lin for “Where have all flowers gone.”
Together with the Taiwan Fashion Design Award, Taipei Fashion Week opened “Fashion of Our Time.” Sponsored by the Ministry of Culture, this creative exhibition offers fashion enthusiasts the opportunity to learn more about the history of Taiwanese fashion, spanning from the 1950s to today.
Post World War II, Taiwan’s cotton textile industry witnessed a boom, with the 1950s and 60s being dubbed the Golden Age of Taiwan’s textile sector. Since then, this global industry has experienced various shifts, with Taiwan adapting to the changing times and becoming one of the dominating forces in the global market of technical textiles. Today, Taiwan is one of the top exporters of clothing products in the world.
